It’s been over a year since Atlanta United hosted a sellout crowd, but the club’s unique home atmosphere could be back sooner than later.
Catie Griggs, United’s vice president of business operations, said she expects the club to host fans at full capacity at Mercedes-Benz Stadium sometime this season. The return of normalcy, though, hinges on the guidance of local officials and approval from Major League Soccer.
United, which holds multiple MLS attendance records, is slated to host the Chicago Fire FC on Saturday. The club announced it will allow about 21,500 fans for the home opener (50% of lower-level soccer configuration). Team officials say seating capacity will be reevaluated on a match-to-match basis.
