In 2021, President Biden signed into law the official observance of Juneteenth as a national holiday, commemorating the day of emancipation for America’s enslaved. That same year, a new public art movement was born in celebration of the holiday.

The “Absolute Equality” Mural Project made its debut in historic Galveston, Texas, a key site in the origin of Juneteenth, with a mural by artist and public art coordinator Reginald C. Adams, proudly bearing the slogan “Absolute Equality” that would define the project in years to come.

This year, “Absolute Equality” expanded with new murals in Los Angeles, D.C., Denver, and Atlanta, all in support of 2024’s Juneteenth celebration. Reginald Adams and participating Atlanta artist Fabian Williams joined “City Lights” host Lois Reitzes to discuss the project and the Atlanta mural currently on view at Morehouse College.
