Rain plus an estimated 60,000 Peachtree Road Race runners equals muddy footsteps. That’s what you saw today throughout Piedmont Park; the race’s end point.

So, how will this portion of Piedmont Park return from brown to green?

“Whenever we have a festival in the park, the organizer of the festival is responsible for restoring the park back to the condition in which it started,” said Atlanta Parks and Recreation Commissioner George Dusenbury.

The Atlanta Track Club organized the Peachtree Road Race. According to Dusenbury, the club along with the city and the Piedmont Park Conservancy will walk through the park on Monday.

“We assess the damage and what needs to be done to restore the park back to where it was before the festival took place.”

The muddy sod in the park will have to be replaced. The Atlanta Track Club will pay that and anything else needed to restore the park. Under city agreements, organizers of events that bring at least 50,000 people to Piedmont Park cover restoration costs.

The next big Piedmont event, Festival Peachtree Latino, will take place in six weeks. That’s the estimated time needed to get the Park back to normal.
