After T-SPLOST Defeat, North Fulton Shows Interest in MARTA Extension Along GA 400

Since the failure of metro Atlanta’s regional transportation referendum, there’s been renewed interest in a MARTA rail extension into north Fulton.

For years, MARTA has floated the idea of a rail extension along the GA 400 corridor – from 285 North near the Perimeter Mall, up through Roswell, and into Alpharetta.

Ann Hanlon of the North Fulton Community Improvement District says the idea seems to be picking up speed.

“Even though the referendum failed, the traffic and congestion is still there and everybody does know that and does agree on that.”

It’s why Hanlon’s organization, along with the North Fulton chamber, recently hosted a forum in which MARTA officials updated local leaders on various transit options.

Hanlon says the forum was well–attended. She added those that came were most interested in a rail extension.

“It seems to make a lot of sense to everybody so far. The footprint of the 400 corridor itself seems to be a natural fit to continue running that rail. There would be some efficiencies and economies of scale there.”

MARTA is still working out cost projections for a potential extension and is expected to produce a report in the spring.
