According to the latest data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it’s estimated that 28.3 million adults in the U.S. smoked cigarettes in 2021.
In addition, in the U.S., more and more people are getting sick due to smoking. At least 16 million people have a smoking-related illness. Smoking is also the leading cause of preventable disability, disease and death.
For nearly 50 years, the American Cancer Society has hosted the Great American Smokeout in an effort to encourage people to quit smoking.
