Atlanta is proud of its history of world-class music, which includes the Grammy-nominated soul singer-songwriter Anthony David. Today, the acclaimed writer, musician and vocalist himself looks back with pride on 20 extraordinary years since his breakthrough debut album, “3 Chords and the Truth.”
David recently celebrated the album with a revival concert at Atlanta’s Center Stage. The artist recently joined “City Lights” host Lois Reitzes to share reflections on the 20-year-old album and his artistry’s evolution.
“3 Chords and the Truth,” rooted in storytelling and simplicity, drew inspiration from legends like Stevie Wonder and Donny Hathaway.
“I wanted something I could grow with,” David said, reflecting on his decision to eschew the bawdiness of early 2000s R&B culture.
Before launching a solo career, David wrote for a number of other artists artists like India.Arie, whom he penned a Billboard charting single with in 2006. Over time, his unreleased songs evolved into a collection that expressed his own personal journey – one of love, life and an extremely human experience.
