APD Will Soon Be Watching With More Cameras

The City of Atlanta’s Video Integration Center went on line last September and already has 650 public and privately owned cameras, watching public spaces.

On Monday, The City Council approved up to 2.25 million dollars in federal grants to add 112   surveillance video cameras throughout downtown and midtown.

APD spokesperson Carlos Campos says they’re excited about expanding the network. “We see this as a strategic vision for fighting crime,” says Campos. “We believe that a robust network of public and private cameras will give us the ability to detect, prevent and respond to crimes in a much better fashion, utilizing high technology.”

The cameras give real time information that can also be used by first responders and for crowd control.

Eventually, Campos says, they hope to have thousands of cameras integrated into the network, with 24-hour surveillance.
