APS Board Expected To Approve 2013 Budget

The Atlanta Public Schools budget is up for approval during today’s school board meeting.

The budget is part of a packed agenda slated for discussion.

The board is expected to adopt the proposed 2013 fiscal year budget set at 5-hundred and 74 million dollars.

There could be much discussion before approving job cuts.

Superintendent Erroll Davis’s recommendation to lay off hundreds of educators and administrators is primarily because of declines in student enrollment   and reductions in local, state or federal funding.

The closure of schools in the new redistricting plan, changes in curriculum structure and outsourcing are all part of APS’s strategy to offset a projected 47-million dollar shortfall.

Another item on the agenda is for a 1.6 million dollar contract with the City of Atlanta for security support services.

A special unit would address public safety issues at APS middle and high schools.
