The urgency and power of thinking for yourself are at the heart of an expansive collection of sculptures, paintings, and installations from the multimedia studio of Alexi Torres. “Unbrainwashable,” a solo exhibition of Alexi Torres’ work, is currently on view at Brenau University’s Castelli Gallery through Nov. 9.

The artist joined “City Lights” on Thursday, via Riverside, along with curator and Brenau University’s Director of Galleries Lybi Cucurullo.

Torres arrived in the United States in 2003 from Cuba, and much of his artwork responds to political realities there.

“In Cuba, everything is political; you can’t escape it. Art is one of the ways you can express yourself with what you want to say in a smart way so you don’t get punished. Some of my art was more direct, and a lot of my art was censored, and the shows were closed,” said Torres.

“I came to the United States, and I was so surprised you could say and do whatever you wanted because all of my art was trying to say something you couldn’t say, and here I had the freedom to express myself as I wanted.”
