A musical friendship for the ages has blessed the life of one of Atlanta’s greatest jazz musicians, pianist Joe Alterman. He’s talked with the jazz piano legend Les McCann nearly every day since they first met at a performance in 2011.

Now, Joe Alterman has released a full-length album entirely in tribute to “Big Mo,” as Les McCann is sometimes affectionately known. “Big Mo and Little Joe,” the new record of McCann classics played by Alterman, came out in August.

In this interview, Joe joins “City Lights” host Lois Reitzes to speak more about the new production.

“When I was really falling in love with Les’s music, I was in school, and they were telling me not to do all of the things I was hearing in Les’s music, but he sounded so good,” Alterman says.

His new record is “Joe Alterman Plays Les McCann: Big Mo & little Joe,” and more information is available here.
