Atlanta Airport GM To Retire

Atlanta’s Airport will need a new general manager.

Louis Miller yesterday announced his retirement from the position at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

Ben DeCosta left as airport general manger in 2010. DeCosta announced his departure not too long after Reed first won election in 2009. Afterwards, a search committee recommended Miller. Miller says, at that time, he planned to be General Manager for at least four years.

“I committed to Mayor Reed that I would complete his first term in office and certainly consider his second term,” Miller said. “But, you know, I’ve reached the point in my life where we’ve decided we want to go ahead and look at the retirement thing.”

Miller worked at airports for 37 years. Before Atlanta, he ran the International Airports in Tampa and Salt Lake City.

As Atlanta’s general manager, he oversaw the final phase of the airport’s new International Terminal. During his tenure, Hartsfield-Jackson remained the world’s busiest passenger airport. Miller also played a key role in the controversial process to re-bid contracts for airport concessions.

In a statement, Mayor Reed said he’s grateful for Miller’s service. His last day will be January 3rd. Miguel Southwell, the airport’s General Manager, will run Hartsfield-Jackson as the city looks for a Miller’s replacement. In 2010, Southwell was a finalist for the job that eventually went to Miller.
