Atlanta Contemporary began in 1973 as an artist-run space dedicated to contemporary exhibitions.
This year, it celebrates its 50th anniversary as a platform for emerging and established artists to exhibit their work.
In celebration of the milestone, Atlanta Contemporary is featuring two major solo exhibitions showcasing legacy artist Sam Gilliam, in dialogue with emerging artist Hasani Sahlehe, on view now through Dec. 23.
In this interview, Atlanta Contemporary curator Veronica Kessenich and the Atlanta-based artist and curator Y. Malik Jalal join “City Lights” host Lois Reitzes to talk more about the anniversary and exhibitions.
“Atlanta Contemporary was founded by artists for artists, always with the belief that artists need spaces to engage in risk and experimentation,” Kessenich says.
