“Atlanta Daily World” under new ownership

The oldest black newspaper in Atlanta has a new owner. Real Times Media of Detroit yesterday said it bought the Atlanta Daily World for an undisclosed amount.

The Atlanta Daily World is just one of several black newspapers the company is trying to make profitable and accessible.

Since 2003, Real Times has owned 5 black newspapers. CEO Hiram Jackson says he’s had his eye on the Daily World for some time.

“We wanted to play with national advertisers,” said Jackson. “Today, you can’t be a national black media company and not be in Atlanta.”

The Atlanta Daily World is 84 years old. It’s always focused on black issues. Until now, it’s always been owned by the Scott Family. Jackson credits that family and the others who have started and grown black newspapers across the country.

“They’ve done an incredible job maintaining the integrity of the name of the brand,” said Jackson. “But, there’s just generally a lack of resources available today if you own a small black newspaper.”

Jackson says Real Times specializes in beefing up black newspapers’ websites and formatting them for smartphones and tables. The content, he says, will still come from the Daily World. Alexis Scott will still be the paper’s publisher.
