Atlanta Gets Perfect Score in LGBT Report
Atlanta is one of the most LGBT-friendly cities in the country.
The capital of the Peach State scored a perfect 100 in the second annual Municipal Equality Index from the Human Rights Campaign.
“It’s the first city in the Deep South to have done so. That’s a really remarkable achievement,” says the HRC’s Cathryn Oakley, who authored the report.
The criteria used to rank cities include non-discrimination laws, relationship recognition and inclusiveness of city services.
Nearly 300 municipalities from all 50 states were studied. In addition to Atlanta, 24 other cities also scored 100 points.
However, despite Atlanta’s ranking, Georgia’s overall score was 39.
Oakley says that’s because some spots in Georgia, including Decatur and North Druid Hills earned less than 30 points apiece.

“So to see these variations within a region or within in a state are not all that unusual. I think it does highlight the immense amount of work that lies ahead for all of us,” says Jeff Graham with Georgia Equality.
He says that’s especially true in Georgia, where same-sex marriage is unconstitutional.
“In a region like the South, where there are so many challenges and hurdles with our state government, it’s even more important for municipalities to do all that they can do to ensure there is a safe and inclusive environment.”
According to the report, Oregon is the most LGBT-friendly state in the U.S.
Wyoming came in last place.
