Atlanta Housing Authority CEO Compensation At Center of HUD New Policy

Once again Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed has concerns about the Atlanta Housing Authority and its chief Renee Glover.

Glover’s compensation was cited this week by the U.S Department of Housing and Urban Development, also known as HUD, as the highest for any housing authority executive in the country at over 6-hundred thousand dollars.

In 2011, HUD asked public housing authorities across the nation to provide data for the top 5 highest paid employees.

The information would come from 2010.

That’s also the same year Renee Glover had her contract renegotiated.

Her base salary would increase to 3- hundred and twenty thousand dollars.

In addition Glover would also be paid for accrued and unused vacation time as well as unpaid sick leave.

That would cover 12 previous years and increased Glover’s total compensation to over 6-hundred thousand dollars.

Spokesperson Sonji Jacobs says the mayor has always been troubled by that agreement.

“Mayor’s reed biggest concern at the time was just making sure that the board was doing what a board is supposed to do and making sure that decisions that have such a meat fiscal impact on the budget are properly vetted and looked at and he was not sure that was the case.”

Glover declined to comment but in a statement, she takes issue with the notion she is grossly overpaid and says the 2010 compensation is misleading and erroneous.

Glover says she has given HUD a breakdown of all her compensation from 2010.

When asked to respond to Glover’s claims, Reed’s spokesperson Sonji Jacobs reiterated the mayor’s concern:

“We’re not here to have a debate about the accuracy of HUD’s number,” said Jacobs.

Reed, according to Jacobs believes, “having a board that rubber stamps a huge pay increase from $225,000, more importantly approves a 5-year contract is an issue.”

Jacobs went onto to say, Mayor Reed does not believe public officials should work under contracts.

The City of Atlanta does not contribute any funds to the Atlanta Housing Authority.

Besides, federal funding the agency generate additional money as housing developer.

Officials with HUD declined to comment about Renee Glover’s salary.

HUD proposes to only contribute 1-hundred and 55 thousand dollars to the salaries of public housing executives.
