On the “City Lights” series “Speaking of Art,” local artists share insights into their influences, processes and experiences in town. This edition features mixed media artist and educator Jaia Robinson.

“I create vibrant, positive work, really highlighting the beauty and struggle amongst Black women especially,” Robinson said. “Just showing the grace and the tenacity is important to me.”

Robinson incorporates vibrant colors and textures into her work, and when working with new material, she likes to take risks and see how things turn out, just like real-world experiences.

The artist started in her craft at a young age, trying to imitate her mother’s even and smooth work.

Now, Robinson works as an art teacher and is inspired by young artists. “They motivate me to use different materials, to incorporate new technology into my work,” Robison said.

“And they also introduce me to new artists which I probably wouldn’t have had a chance to come across on my own.”
