Atlanta Ranked Top American City for Income Inequality
The Brookings Institution says Atlanta has greater income inequality than any other major American city.Broadcast Version
The new rankings from the Washington think tank compare the income of the top five percent of earners to the lowest twenty percent.
Report author Alan Berube says the dubious distinction of earning the number-one spot is a reflection of an unequal economy in Atlanta overall, saying “You’ve got a lot of jobs that employ very highly educated people in headquarters for multi-national firms, at the CDC at the same time that you have a lot of jobs in very low wage sectors or sectors that got battered during the recession like real estate like personal services.”
Berube says top earners in Atlanta make $280,000 or more per year, while those at the bottom make less than $15,000 annually.
The study looked only at the City of Atlanta, but Berube says the trend holds true throughout the metro area.
