Atlanta’s new esports team now has a name: Atlanta Reign. It’s part of the global Overwatch League, the first major city-based esports league to base its teams in specific cities.
The league is based on the video game “Overwatch”: a popular science-fiction video game from a first-person perspective.
It’s interactive and can be played with up to six players on each team.
A typical video game match between two teams is broadcast on a large screen in a Los Angeles arena, where more than 500 people watch.
The new team is owned by Atlanta Esports Ventures, a partnership established this year between media group Cox Enterprises and Nevada-based consulting firm Province Inc.
Games will continue to be played in Los Angeles for now, but the Overwatch League said it eventually plans to build esports stadiums in all of its home cities, including Atlanta.
In September, the team announced Brad “Sephy” Rajani would be the team’s head coach, Dimitri “Silence” Couturet as assistant coach, Cas “Casores” van Andel as player development coach, Danny “Danny” Mychakov as data analyst and Dongmin “Dongmin” Jeong as translator. Other players have been announced on its Twitter page.
