Current Atlanta Board of Education chairman Reuben McDaniel is headed to a December run-off to keep his seat.

And now, WABE’s Rose Scott reports McDaniel’s name is in the mix for a national high profile position.

Professional sports are about making money.

While the million dollar athletes are playing on the court, the National Basketball Players Association is busy making sure their employer (the league) is also playing fairly.

Reuben McDaniel says it was a surprise that his name was offered as its next executive director.

“It’s very early in the process and I’ve only had one conversation with the search firm. But, certainly it is flattering to be considered even at that level and we’ll see where the process takes us.”

Since 1954, the National Basketball Players Association has been the negotiating mouthpiece for the players as well as providing money management resources.

McDaniel has 25-years of investment banker experience and has celebrity and professional athletes as clients.

The APS board chair is president and CEO of RM Capital Management an Atlanta based asset management company.

He says just being a part of the executive director’s search highlights the value of the APS board.

“I just think that having people on the board who would even be considered for jobs like this, just speaks and talks to my qualifications and what people think about me nationally,” says McDaniel.

Reuben McDaniel says regardless of having gone through a preliminary screening for the job, his main priority lies with the Atlanta Board of Education.

The runoff election is December 3rd, 2013.

Four APS board seats will be decided.

McDaniel’s opponent is attorney Cynthia Briscoe Brown.
