Brookhaven Agrees to Pay DeKalb $3.2 Million for Services
Brookhaven and DeKalb County have finally agreed on how much the county should be paid for providing services for Brookhaven.Listen to the audio version of this story.
Brookhaven owed DeKalb County for providing over seven months of police services and park management. The question was…how much?
The initial agreement was as high as five million dollars. But after negotiations, the city and County settled on $3.2 million. According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, this is almost 20 percent higher than what Dunwoody paid DeKalb for its services in 2008 as it was transitioning to cityhood.
Brookhaven City Councilman for District 3, Bates Mattison, feels the settlement was the right path for the new city.
“The County and the city both worked together to come up with a mutually agreeable number that was fair, and $3.2 million was a fair number for both DeKalb County and the city.”
Mattison assures that Brookhaven is financially stable to uphold both their police department and their parks.
“We have been able to have a balanced budget that allows us the funds to be able to fully fund our city’s first year of operations and be able to have an agreement to pay DeKalb County for the services they provided.”
Brookhaven took control of the police department on July 31st, and the city will take over park management on September 3rd.
