Burger King Owner Buys Atlanta-Based Popeyes
Atlanta-based Popeyes is getting a new owner.
The company behind Burger King is buying the fried chicken chain for almost $2 billion. It comes after Popeyes Louisiana Chicken made some changes to its fast food image.
The company’s been remodeling its restaurants and tweaking the flavors of its food. According to analyst John Gordon, the chain’s taking a card from fast casual restaurants, like Chipotle.
Now, Gordon said Burger King’s owner is likely interested in expanding that Popeyes brand to an international market.
“That is where the real potential for future development is,” Gordan said.
The downside of this buyout and expansion may be felt in Atlanta, however. Burger King’s owner didn’t share plans for Popeye’s corporate base, but Gordon said the company has a history of cutting costs after acquisitions.
Popeyes’ headquarters here employs more than 250 people.
