Capacity Crowd Expected For North Atlanta High School Community Meeting

A capacity crowd is expected for Tuesday’s community meeting with Atlanta Public Schools superintendent Erroll Davis.

It will take place at North Atlanta High School.

Last week Davis authorized the removal of Principal Mark Mygrant and the reassignment of the entire administrative staff of the leadership academies.

The sudden change took parents and others by surprise and that includes the principal at the time Mark Mygrant.

He told the Atlanta Journal Constitution that both APS director of instruction and curriculum Karen Waldon and an interim human resources director told him his services were no longer needed.

APS spokesperson Steve Alford confirmed Mygrant knew nothing of the changes.

The school’s graduation rate is 61%, among the lowest in APS.

“Mr. Mygrant was advised of the transition on Friday,” said Alford.

When asked if Mygrant deserved a better end to his tenure as principal, Alford declined comment.

He insisted all changes are made for the good of students.

North Atlanta parent Julie Salisbury says she is hoping Superintendent Erroll Davis will have a more detailed explanation of the changes.

“I think all parents are going in wanting more information about the why and not just why a leadership change but also why in the manner in which it unfolded.”

Salisbury is also part of the parent based education group Step Up For Public Schools.

She says if these changes are for the good of students, she hopes it will increase North Atlanta’s graduation rate.

Under a new formula, the school’s graduation rate is among the lowest in APS.

“North Atlanta’s graduation rates under previous reporting were 88% and under new reporting were 61% and it was the most precipitous [drop in the] entire system.”

North Atlanta’s new principal Dr. Howard Taylor begins October 29th.

Until he arrives, a new eight member transition team is in place.

Meanwhile, other parents have started a petition demanding the educators be reinstated.
