This is Extreme Heat Awareness Week at the Atlanta-based Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

This is Extreme Heat Awareness Week at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. WABE's John Lorinc reports.

CDC Director Dr. Tom Frieden says people of all ages can be affected by high temperatures, but extra attention should be paid to the elder population once the mercury rises well above what is typical.

“As we get into the heat season, it’s important to know that people who are older are very susceptible and fans don’t help.  In fact, fans can make it worse.  Getting into an air conditioned space is very important.”

According to the CDC, extreme temperatures kill nearly 700 Americans every year.
