State Rep. Carl Gilliard (D-Savannah), chair of the Georgia Legislative Black Caucus, is scheduled to give the keynote speech during Atlanta’s Juneteenth Parade and Music Festival on Saturday at Centennial Olympic Park.
Juneteenth, now a national holiday, is dedicated to commemorating the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States.
It marks the day in 1865 when Union soldiers, including the United States Colored Troop (USCT), enforced the Emancipation Proclamation and freed the remaining enslaved people in Galveston, Texas.
