City Council OKs Free Wi-Fi At Hartsfield

In a few months, travelers at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport could be surfing the Web for free after a proposal passed a key hurdle at today’s city council meeting.As heard on the radio

The council voted 12-0 on a plan for a wireless internet system upgrade at the airport. It paves the way for free Wi-Fi in the coming months, possibly as early as March.

Councilwoman Felicia Moore chairs the Transportation Committee.

“We’ll be providing the same type of service that you may be able to get in other airports, and our customer satisfaction will increase because that will be one of the things that people have asked for that we’re now providing,” said Felicia Moore, who heads the Transportation Committee.

Moore said the system would gradually be upgraded to accommodate for more simultaneous users. According the proposal, the upgrade would boost simultaneous user capacity from 4,000 to 15,000.

Airport officials said the project could cost up to $6 million, to be paid through the airport budget.

The resolution now heads to Mayor Kasim Reed for his signature.

Reed has said he’s in favor of the plan.
