The Clayton County school system is in the middle of a scheduled accreditation review. Stakeholders and parents are expected to watch the process carefully.
The district lost its accreditation in 2008. It took about three years to earn it back. Clayton Schools Spokesperson David Waller says with that in mind, the school system has been preparing for the three-day review conducted by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
“They look at our system, they check out our web page, they look at some of our schools, they look at our testing data,” Waller says, “So, they look at all of those things. Then, they determine which questions they’d like to ask, what they’d like to look at a little more.”
SACS sent a Letter of Concern to the district last fall, outlining some continuing problems. They included infighting among board members and micro management.
“The board has obviously addressed those issues and taken their concerns very seriously,” Waller says, “So, we feel really solid about where we are right now.”
The review period will end on Wednesday. It will take up to 30 days for SACS to notify the district of its accreditation status.
