Clayton County Suspends Police Chief
Clayton County Police Chief Greg Porter has been suspended without pay.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is looking into allegations against Chief Porter at the request of the Clayton District Attorney.
According to GBI spokesperson Sherry Lang, “They were allegations regarding political corruption which involved he and his brother fraudulently obtaining grant funding.”
The grant money was paid to the chief and his brother to monitor probationers, a second job Porter held while he was a deputy.
Porter’s attorney, Manny Arora, says paperwork should prove his client innocent. “We provided letters from the county saying that they reviewed everything. They thought they owed us more money,” said Arora. “The documents speak for themselves. If the GBI says they read the numbers a different way, then we’ll eventually end up in court.”
The County Commission made the decision this week to suspend Porter. Commission Chairman Jeff Turner did not return WABE’s calls seeking comment.
Chuck Spahos of the Prosecuting Attorneys Council says he expects to make a decision soon on whether to take the case to a grand jury.
