Cobb County Commission to Vote on Final Atlanta Braves Deal
Cobb County commissioners could soon vote on a final deal with the Atlanta Braves for a new baseball stadium in the county.
Wednesday, Cobb officials released draft documents of several agreements county commissioners need to approve before construction starts. County spokesman Robert Quigley says a draft agreement laying out the county’s portion of stadium funding is virtually identical to a Memorandum of Understanding county commissioners approved last November.
“The county’s portion and the Braves portion remain the same. The county’s contribution is $300 million. The Braves is $372 million.”
The documents say the county’s contribution would be $368 million, but Quigley says that figure will be lowered to $300 million by the $6.1 million dollars the Braves will pay in rent per year.
According to the documents, the total project cost will be $622 million but could reach a maximum of $672 million. Commissioners are expected to vote on the agreements during a meeting on May 27.
Another agreement specifies that construction start no later than November 1. If approved as it stands now, the deal would require the Braves to remain at the stadium through the 2046 season.
With interest, Cobb taxpayers are expected to pay at least $537 million over 30 years for the new stadium.
