The Cobb County school board is expected to vote Thursday night on a budget for the upcoming school year. The district is facing an $86 million deficit.

To balance the budget, the board is considering some steep cuts. Board member David Morgan says the district has to adjust to living within its means, which includes a shrinking tax digest.

“Until we deal with what really is, as opposed to what used to be, we’ll continue to have these types of challenges and these types of deep cuts,” Morgan says.

The cuts include five teacher furlough days, the elimination of an additional five instructional days, and cutting about 180 staff positions. The board has considered adding new sources of revenue, such as expanding its online learning program. But Morgan says that plan has been scaled back.

“I’m a fan of implementing it at a higher level than what’s currently being proposed simply because when you’re changing business as usual, you have to think outside of the box in terms of how you deliver education,” he says.

The district has already held public budget hearings. The board has until the end of next month to approve the budget.
