There are many clubs synonymous with comedy, The Improv, The Comedy Store, Laughing Skull, here in Atlanta  and now perhaps we can add Relapse Comedy Theatre to the list.

Los Angeles-based stand-up Rory Scovel chose it as the setting for his first special for Netflix. The special is called “Rory Scovel Tries Stand-Up for the First Time” and features the comic riffing on aging into his 30s, the 2016 presidential election, and how microphones work.

The South Carolina-born comic is now based in Los Angeles, but says he chose Atlanta to shoot the special because of his connection to the city.

“Several years ago, I went and performed at the Relapse Theatre after my shows at another venue at their famous 1 AM shows,” Scovel said. “To this day, one of them in particular is the greatest show I’ve ever done. There was this special energy in the room and the improv crowd and the stand-up crowd, they didn’t look at me as though I was just a comic coming to town to perform, they really embraced me as though I was a part of their scene and part of their family. I felt immediate friendships with those comics.”

“Because of that, shooting the special was like ‘I gotta do something at Relapse,’ that place is just a special home for me.”
