Connie Stokes Running for Governor

Former State Senator and DeKalb County Commissioner Connie Stokes says she is planning to run for governor.

The Lithonia Democrat says she wants the people to determine what her platform should be.

Stokes says the state needs improvement in many areas. She is targeting five at the top: education, jobs, healthcare, transportation and government transparency.

But she is not revealing any details of her platform.

“If I say, ‘I know what needs to be done. Here’s how you fix it. And this is my platform.’ That’s not what people want. What they want is, ‘Will you represent my voice? Let’s work on this platform together.’”

Stokes says she will start a listening tour at the end of this month, and once she has heard from Georgians, she says she will officially throw her hat in the ring and flesh out why she thinks she would make a better governor than incumbent Nathan Deal.

If Deal runs, he will face opposition in the Republican primary from State School Superintendent John Barge and Dalton Mayor David Pennington.

Stokes is the first Democrat to announce her candidacy. She served six years on the DeKalb County Commission and ten years in the State Senate.  She ran for Congress unsuccessfully in 2010.
