Construction Rebounds in the South

The construction industry is making a comeback throughout the South. There's a boost in construction projects throughout the South, including metro Atlanta. WABE's John Lorinc reports.

A recent report from the Associated Builders and Contractors shows the region from Texas through the Carolinas has a construction backlog of more than 9 months.

A backlog measures how much work is planned to be performed by industrial and commercial contractors.

According to the group, that’s the highest that indicator has been in the South in well over a year.

Metro Atlanta is among the Southern cities enjoying a boost in upcoming construction projects, including a new stadium for the Atlanta Falcons.  That alone is expected to bring a billion dollars to the area within the next four years.

“That will be a huge shot in the arm for the economy here,” says Brian Terrell, the managing director of Jones Lang Lasalle, a real estate advisory company.

Atlanta’s healthcare sector is also providing work for local builders.

“Emory has a new 250-bed tower rising as well as Northside Hospital, up in North Fulton,” says Terrell.

According to Terrell, construction in Atlanta, and across the country is rebounding thanks in large part to improvements in the U.S. economy.
