Council To Vote On Free Wi-Fi At Hartsfield
The Atlanta City Council Tuesday is expected to vote on a plan to bring free Wi-Fi to Hartsfield-Jackson Airport.As heard on the radio
Airport officials plan to seek approval from the council Tuesday afternoon on a proposal for a wireless internet system upgrade. If passed, the update would make way for free Wi-Fi access for those passing through the world’s busiest airport.
Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed is in favor of the idea.
“I think we have a world-class airport. It’s the most important airport in the world. And I think we should have free Wi-Fi,” Reed said, adding he believes the council will approve the plan.
Airport officials said the project could cost as much as $6 million.
Interim General Manager Miguel Southwell said the upgrade would provide a necessary increase to the system’s user capacity, boosting it to handle 15,000 simultaneous users from just 4,000.
Southwell said the planned expansion will be big enough to handle a potential surge in internet usage.
“We certainly think that’s enough to take us into the short to medium term,” he said.
Johnson Controls Inc. has been selected to install the systems upgrade.
Southwell said free Wi-Fi could be up and running by March.
