DECAL in Need of Summer Meal Sponsors
Georgia’s Department of Early Care and Learning is looking for sponsors to provide meals for children this summer. The program aims to bridge the gap for students who receive free and reduced-price meals during the school year.

The Summer Food Service Program distributed 3.6 million meals last summer. This summer, DECAL wants to increase that number. To do that, they need more sponsors. Felita Flowers, the department’s interim director of nutrition services, says many organizations are eligible.
“Any public or private non-profit organization, colleges, universities, or residential camps are eligible as well as school systems, public school systems throughout the state,” Flowers says.
DECAL would like to have at least one site in every county. Although the service is typically offered at traditional locations, Flowers says this year sponsors can set up mobile sites.
“They can actually deliver meals to a set location and serve to children either on that vehicle where meals are transported or around that vehicle,” she says.
Summer may seem far off, but DECAL is looking for sponsors now because training starts in February. For information on becoming a sponsor, click here, call 1-855-550-7377, or email SFSP@decal.ga.gov.
