Decatur-Born Actor Omar Dorsey On His ‘Queen Sugar’ Role

Actor Omar Dorsey has appeared in several Academy Award-winning movies, but his recent success has been on a smaller screen.

“Queen Sugar” is a new television series created by Ava DuVernay with Oprah Winfrey as the executive director. The story centers on three siblings, who must return to their family’s rural Louisiana farm after their father passes away. Dorsey plays Hollywood Desonier, the siblings’ aunt’s boyfriend, who provides wisdom and support to the other characters.

This is the second time Dorsey has worked with DuVernay and Winfrey. He played James Orange in “Selma.” For “Queen Sugar,” DuVernay said she wrote the Hollywood role specifically for Dorsey.

“She asked me what I thought about the script and the Hollywood Desonier character, and I said that I love it, I really do, and she said, that’s a role I really want you to play,” Dorsey said. “I said, that’s awesome, when can I audition? And she said, no, I want you to play that role.”

Dorsey commented on how more and more strong film actors and directors are moving toward television.

“It’s the golden era, where I would even venture to say that television is surpassing film in terms of storytelling,” Dorsey said.

“Queen Sugar” premieres tonight on the Oprah Winfrey Network, or OWN. It has already been renewed for a second season.
