DeKalb CEO Recommends Three Finalist Sites for Animal Shelter

Advocates pushing DeKalb County to build a new animal shelter turned out in force at a county commission meeting today; they were expecting to hear a final recommendation on a proposed site.

But they didn’t exactly get what they came for.

Nearly 100 people, all wearing stickers that said “PDK Yes,” waited to hear what had been promised as a single shelter site recommendation from DeKalb CEO Burrell Ellis’s office.

Instead, his office named three finalists including the site the group wants near DeKalb-Peachtree Airport. Barbara Davis, a member of Advocates for DeKalb Animals,” told WABE, “It’s a mixed day. We wish that we had the definitive answer today. But we’re happy with the three sites.”

The two other sites are both on Lawrenceville Highway. One is a vacant car dealership near Church Street. The other is green space the county already owns just outside I-285.

The commission asked the staff to continue evaluating the three sites.

Commissioner Kathie Gannon acknowledged the advocates’ frustration. “I say these people have been absolutely fantastic to hold our feet to the fire as they should have,” she told reporters. “The process took entirely too long, but we are now moving in the direction to make a decision for sure within two weeks or sooner.”

The CEO’s office said last week he hoped the commission would vote on his recommendation June 11. That does not appear as likely now with three sites in the mix.
