It’s been one week since DeKalb County School District (DCSD) students returned to school for face-to-face learning.

Superintendent Cheryl Watson-Harris, who leads the third-largest school system in Georgia, says the district has had a strong start, and the district will continue to monitor COVID data amid the ongoing health crisis.

“We were one of the first districts to institute a mandatory mask policy, all of our students and staff are wearing masks, which we know is very important, part of our mitigation strategy,” explain Watson-Harris on Tuesday’s edition of “Closer Look.”

In addition to masks being mandatory, DCSD is also offering masks breaks that allow students to take off their masks when they are outside.

Watson-Harris further explained the district’s back-to-school plan and discussed the purpose of its first-ever safe center.

She also talked with show host Rose Scott importance of everyone working together as a community to implement the mitigation strategy so that schools don’t have to close.

“We know that our children, majority of them do better in the schoolhouse,” said  Watson-Harris.
