The superintendent of DeKalb County Schools says the district is committed to meeting the standards of the accrediting agency that has concerns about the school system.

Dr. Cheryl Atkinson sent a three page response to AdvanceEd, the parent company of The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

After receiving complaints about the school system, SACS sent a letter on August 28th.

The accrediting agency explained some of the allegations dealt with mismanagement of funds and the board’s interference in the day-to-day operations of the district.

Those concerns fall under two of the five standards set forth by SACS’ for accreditation.

In DeKalb’s response, Superintendent Dr. Cheryl Atkinson listed 16 “systemic changes” she’s implemented during her tenure.

That includes a zero-based budgeting process, an education strategic plan and division audits.

SACS did acknowledge receipt of the letter but it could take 7-10 days before a decision is released from its accreditation department.

Interview request to speak with Dr. Atkinson were declined.

A spokesperson for the district told WABE Superintendent Dr. Atkinson doesn’t like to do media interviews.
