Dekalb Finds Way to Fund School Construction Projects
The Dekalb County Schools has found a way to fund planned construction projects after discovering a 31 million dollar budget shortfall.
A voter-approved Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax, called SPLOST three, was supposed to cover the costs. Instead, the school system will use money from the next round of SPLOST funding. Dekalb Schools Spokesman Walter Woods says the district has found additional ways to shore up the gap.
“We’re going to pay for it month to month rather than bond it out,” Woods says, “That will save us $11,000,000 over the course of the SPLOST.”
Woods says every elementary school will have the same design prototype.
“We’ve seen this work successfully in other districts where they save great economies of scale and they also bring a very consistent footprint that’s more easy to manage for the district across the county,” he explains.
Woods says all of the projects will be completed on schedule.
