DeKalb Officer Who Shot Anthony Hill Set To Appear In Court

A former DeKalb County police officer indicted for killing an unarmed black man is scheduled to appear in court Monday afternoon.

Robert Olsen faces two counts of felony murder and two counts of violating his oath of office, among others.

He’ll be formally read the charges against him in an arraignment hearing in DeKalb County Superior Court.

“It’s a formality,” says legal analyst Page Pate. “The process does not take very long, and in many counties, it’s usually waved. So it’s not a hearing, it’s not a determination of the strength of the case, and no evidence will be presented.”

DeKalb’s District Attorney Robert James, the man who helped secure Olsen’s grand jury indictment, will leave office at the end of the year, likely before the case goes to trial. James lost his reelection bid to the county’s solicitor general Sherry Boston.

“If the judge sets the case into next year for trial, it will be Ms. Boston’s responsibility to either try the case, resolve the case or dismiss the case,” Pate says. “She has the ability to do that as the district attorney.”

Pate says under Georgia law, James’ office cannot appoint a special prosecutor in a case like this.

Olsen was indicted for killing Air Force veteran Anthony Hill, who was naked at the time and suffering a bipolar episode.

Olsen is currently out on bond.
