For the first time, the DeKalb County school board will consider adopting a “No Nepotism” policy. The district has come under fire for allegedly operating a “friends and family network” for years.
When the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools placed DeKalb on probation in December, officials cited nepotism. Mark Elgart, the CEO of SACS’ parent company, said the problem was systemic.
“There is evidence not just of nepotism but of friends getting favors throughout the system,” Elgart said, “There’s a whole pattern that goes well beyond the last year, goes well beyond the last decade.”
At a meeting with a group of DeKalb parents this week, interim superintendent Michael Thurmond said for the first time, the board will consider banning nepotism.
“The statute, the policy that’s being proposed will be effective on the date that the board passes it,” Thurmond said, “And so it will address any hiring or promotion or contracting that occurs from that day forward.”
The policy is posted online for public comment until the next board meeting in May. The board is expected to vote on it then.
