Dekalb School Board to Vote on New Calendar
The Dekalb County school board will vote on a new school calendar Monday night. After hearing from the public, Dekalb Superintendent Cheryl Atkinson will recommend the board adopt a “balanced” calendar.
Residents had a chance to vote on one of two calendars posted on the district’s website.
A traditional calendar is similar to what the district follows now. A balanced calendar has a shorter summer, with more breaks throughout the year.
Lillian Govus is the digital program manager for the Dekalb schools. She says if the board doesn’t approve the superintendent’s recommendation, that doesn’t necessarily mean the district will revert to a traditional calendar.
“It could mean that they make recommendations to change the calendar in certain ways and those get incorporated and then it comes back for a subsequent vote,” Govus explains, “So, there are definitely several options before the board.”
If the board approves the balanced calendar, it will take effect during the 2013-2014 school year.
