The DeKalb County school board has tentatively restored a bonus program the district discontinued in 2009. District spokesperson Lillian Govus says some school system employees would receive bonuses for perfect–or close to perfect—attendance.

“If they don’t miss any days then they could be reimbursed $150,” she says, “If they only miss one day, they’ll be reimbursed $100, for two days, it would be $75,  and for three days it would be $50.”

Eligible employees include bus drivers, food service workers, and clerical staff.  The program costs about one million dollars. But Govus says it costs more to pay substitutes to fill in.

“Last year alone, we spent $220,000  for food service workers,” Govus says, “We spent $540,000 for bus drivers. We spent $200,000 for clerical workers and another $275,000 for paraprofessionals.”

Other metro Atlanta school districts, such as Cobb and Gwinnett, have similar programs. The DeKalb County school board will take a final vote on the bonus program later this month. If approved, it will take effect July first.
