As Georgians brace for the summer heat, board-certified dermatologist Anthony Rossi of the American Academy of Dermatology is urging people to be “sun smart” this summer.

On Thursday’s edition of “Closer Look” Rossi talked about what people can do to protect their skin as Georgia temperatures are expected to reach the hottest they’ve been in 30 years.

During the conversation, Rossi talked about skin cancer prevention and the importance of wearing sunscreen and protective clothing.

“If you are not into those chemical sunscreens, and also for infant and toddlers, we recommend using mineral-based sunscreen, so those are [made using] zinc,” explained Rossi.

Georgia’s rate of skin cancer is above the national average. The most recent reports show more than 200 Georgians died from skin cancer in 2019.
