Despite Rain from Isaac, Drought Persists
Georgia received some rain from Hurricane Isaac, but most of the state still remains in a drought. However, a few areas received a boost from the storm. Most regions that received rain from Isaac, got less than an inch. But state climatologist Bill Murphey says some places did a little better.
“[The area from] Tifton, up to Augusta, they did receive some beneficial rainfall amounts,” Murphey says, “So, those areas did improve a good bit.”
In terms of rainfall totals, Augusta is now just 3.5 inches below normal. In January, it was about 10 inches below. Murphey says areas like Atlanta and Macon are still in extreme or exceptional drought. But, he says, there’s some rain in the forecast.
“The chance is still there to have some afternoon and evening thundershowers,” he explains, “We’ve still got a decent shot at that because we’ll still have a good bit of moisture over the state.”
Those showers would provide temporary relief. Murphey says Georgia’s high temperatures cause rain to evaporate soon after it hits the ground.
