Despite Weather, Race Still On

The Peachtree Road Race has never been canceled due to weather.

Tracey Russell, executive director of the Atlanta Track Club, which organizes the 10K, is reiterating the race is rain or shine.

“If you run in the heat you’re going to perspire you’re going to get wet, it’s just now coming from the sky versus yourself so we would just say get out there and enjoy the Fourth of July and you’re probably going to get wet and be prepared for that.”

Tomorrow, colored flags will indicate the status of the race: green for good conditions, yellow for less than ideal, red for potentially dangerous, and black to call off the race.

Russell says the race is currently at a yellow color, which means not ideal, but still a go.

“We’re working very closely with the National Weather Service and Atlanta-Fulton County Emergency Management Agency and we’ll be monitoring the weather forecasts so it will be several people involved looking to see what’s happening.”

Beyond that, race organizers say it’ll be situational.

“The safety of our participants and volunteers and spectators are our number one priority so we work with them on the different contingency plans and we’ll communicate them out when we know more,” said Tracey Lott, a spokesperson for the Atlanta Track Club.

Colored flags will be located at the start line, at the various water stations and in the finish area.

60,000 runners, along with 150,000 spectators, are expected in Atlanta for the race.
