Do Not Drink Advisory Lifted for Part of Murray Co.; FBI Continues Investigation

The Chatsworth Water System Wednesday lifted a “do not drink” advisory.

The move comes after someone broke into a Murray County water treatment facility Friday at the Carters Lake Water Treatment Facility near the Ramhurst community.

Officials say someone with a key changed the chlorine and fluoride settings.

The station was off-line that day, and officials say no one was at risk.

Special Agent Stephen Emmett with Atlanta’s FBI Office confimed the agency’s involvement, but declined further comment.

“I can’t really discuss the progress of that investigation or elaborate beyond confirming that we’ve been pulled up to assist out of an abundance of caution,” he said.

Tampering with a public water system is a federal crime, and carries up to a 20-year sentence.

The plant remains offline, which means it isn’t treating water for residents’ consumption.  It could restart as soon as Friday.
