Documentary Aims to Recapture Magic, Music of Pioneering Southern Rock Festivals
It’s been more than four decades since hundreds of thousands of young people flocked to two auto race tracks in Georgia to witness the South’s first rock music festivals.
The first Atlanta International Pop Festival at Atlanta Motor Speedway in Hampton, the second Atlanta International Pop Festival at Middle Georgia Raceway in Byron; and then the Texas International Pop Festival outside Dallas, held in the summers of 1969 and 1970, were organized by Alex Cooley–an individual now well-known for his long career as a successful music promoter in Atlanta.
What happened at those historic events is to be the subject of a documentary entitled, “Alex Cooley Presents Time Has Come Today”. David Lee of Athens is an executive producer of the project.
In a conversation with WABE’s Steve Goss, he recalled the scene–as a 14 year-old fan–at the Byron festival.Steve Goss interviews Alex Cooley.
