DOMA Ruling: Personal Emotions, Financial Questions for Atlanta’s Gay and Lesbian Community

Ga. General Assembly

On Wednesday, June 26, 2013, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down a key provision of the Defense of Marriage Act. Section 3 had denied legally married same-sex couples many of the same benefits available to married straight couples.

For members of Atlanta’s gay and lesbian community, the decision provoked personal emotions and financial questions.

WABE’s Denis O’Hayer spoke with two people who are trying to sort things out.  Cleo Myer has been in a committed relationship with her partner for 15 years; Doug Brooks was married to his partner in Massachusetts in 2005.  Each has children.

O’Hayer also explored some of the unanswered questions raised by the decision, in a conversation with State Rep. Karla Drenner (D-Avondale Estates), who has been in a committed relationship with her partner for years.
