Downtown Atlanta Olympics-Era Peach Tower Taken Down

Drivers coming from the south end into Atlanta might have noticed a metal peach missing from the skyline.

The peach tower stood atop the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers building just west of the Downtown Connector.

The reason why it was taken down turns out to be pretty simple.

“We hated that peach,” said Max Mount Jr., the local IBEW president. “It was ugly and we couldn’t stand it.”

Mount said the peach tower belonged to an advertising agency, which had leased the space from IBEW since the Olympics.

When that lease expired recently, Mount said the union had no reservations about letting the peach go.

Asked if IBEW would put something in the peach’s place, Mount said, “Heck no.”

“You know I was at the bar, you know the guy asked me, ‘What are you going to put up there now? A peanut?’” Mount said. “We’re getting out of the produce business.”

Another peach tower still stands on the northern end of the downtown connector.
